NICOLLE MARTIN
SKÅL INTERNATIONAL CÔTE D’AZUR
As Skål International Côte d’Azur celebrated the 91st anniversary of its founding in Nice, Nicolle Martin reflects on the past few years dedicated to the development of the Riviera club, inseparable from a professional career devoted to tourism and the promotion of the city of Nice. A meeting with an elegant, straightforward, passionate, and determined woman whose story is full of surprising anecdotes.
September 2018: the enthronement of Nicolle elected 40th president of Skål International Côte d'Azur
Skål International – Skål International Côte d’Azur
What is Skål? A Viking toast? It all began in 1932 in Copenhagen with the inauguration of the Amsterdam-Copenhagen-Malmö flight aboard a Fokker F.VII Trimotor. A group of Parisian travel agents, present in Sweden at the invitation of several transport companies, decided upon their return to celebrate the friendship among tourism professionals by creating an international club. The first Skål Club was born in Paris in 1932, built around the motto: ”doing business among friends with goodwill”. Today, it is the only network that brings together tourism professionals from around the world, present on all continents.
When Nicolle Martin was asked to take over the presidency of the Côte d’Azur club in 2018, it had only nine members left. Already retired, she could have declined the offer, but that wouldn’t have been like her. She threw herself into the task wholeheartedly and brilliantly. By 2024, Skål Côte d’Azur became the fastest-growing club in the world, gathering 223 active professional members from the travel and tourism sectors of the Côte d’Azur. Surrounded by an exceptional volunteer team – Michel Bouthiba, Vice-President; Nathalie Zafra, General Secretary; Christine Hoareau, Treasurer – Nicolle has made her mark and created an unparalleled dynamic. Her deep knowledge of the industry, a network built over many years, and her personal attention to each member contributed to this success: ”I make sure that every member of the network can grow their business within the club; I never forget a birthday; I create a personal connection with everyone”. Not to mention an increased presence on social media: ”I had to learn everything; I knew nothing about it six years ago!” But how did she get here?

The Whims of Life
Nothing predestined Nicolle Martin for this unique path. Passionate about literature, she began studying linguistics, dreaming of far-off places, imagining herself as a flight attendant. She passed the Air France exam, much to her father’s dismay, who strongly opposed this vocation. Through his connections, he found her a student job at the Nice tourist office. It was a disappointment for Nicolle, but now she’s grateful: “As a flight attendant, I wouldn’t have had the same career.” Installed in drab offices near the train station, Nicolle passed the time waiting for night train travelers. Along with her colleagues, all students, they decided one day to go on strike to demand a raise. ”We went to see Françoise Giroud, who was on vacation in Saint-Jean-Cap- Ferrat. She welcomed and supported us. We won our fight, and all the employees at tourist offices across France received a raise. It’s an extraordinary memory”. This was Nicolle’s first significant achievement. She got married and became a full-time employee at the tourist office, although without much enthusiasm. That is, until one day in 1975, when a man walked in, introducing himself as her new director, and said to her: ”I’ve heard a lot about you, both good and bad. You don’t leave anyone indifferent, so you interest me. I’m sure you’ll do great things; we’ll team up and create Nice Promotion”. This visionary and charismatic man would change her life, helping her overcome her shyness and setting in motion the international promotion of Nice. Gaston Franco, who was then Chief of Staff for Francis Palmero, had just accepted this significant mission, appointed by the mayor of Nice at the time, Jacques Médecin.
Miss Carnival
Thus began an incredible adventure for the small team of twelve. Nice Promotion would eventually become today’s metropolitan tourism office, Nice Côte d’Azur. ”We learned everything; we found ways to succeed without funding. We were pioneers in many areas, such as promoting and selling packages that included transport, restaurants, and hotels – an idea that was later adopted by many tourist offices around the world”. Initially responsible for the French market, Nicolle acted as the liaison between Nice’s professionals, tour operators, travel agents, and bus companies. She recalls with humor her first marketing trip, navigating with a road map, without a phone or GPS, searching for bus companies in Northern France – ”a different time!” After landing on a farm, surrounded by buses and chickens, she eventually convinced a bus operator to organize trips to Nice for the Carnival. The same happened with the local Air Inter agent, who was initially reluctant to reserve seats for groups. ”I never gave up; after three years, what was just a trial became an annual event, and by the fourth year, the plane for the Carnival was fully booked”. Over the years, the woman who became known as ”Miss Carnival” expanded her reach, becoming responsible for Switzerland, then Belgium, England, Canada, the Middle East, Greece, Turkey, and North Africa. Dedicated to her work, Nicolle traveled extensively: ”What a joy to live my passion for tourism. At the time, I was traveling two to three times a month, and I still have friends worldwide through Skål”. She was so invested in her work that she didn’t notice the storm brewing…
Shadow and Light
When her husband asked her to choose between her career and their marriage, Nicolle was in shock. ”We adored each other. I’ve always had a certain recklessness; I charge ahead without seeing the danger, like when we were in Chad, and a herd of elephants was about to attack our group. I was still trying to save our water bottles to make sure everyone had enough to drink... A participant’s gunshot saved us”. The divorce was painful and destabilizing for both Nicolle and her eleven-year-old son. The breakup felt like a familiar pattern. Nicolle, an only child of parents who were also only children, grew up under their loving care: ”I never lacked anything, spoiled like a princess, adored until I was twelve”. Her father’s refusal to let her grow up led to a devastating shift in his behavior. Nicolle’s life has always oscillated between stories of adoration and abandonment, something not always easy to bear for someone so sensitive. From childhood, she sensed a disconnect between her family life and the outside world: put on a pedestal at home, she was bullied at school: ”They called me ‘carrot head’”. Nicolle inherited her Venetian blonde, curly hair from her Armenian maternal grandfather, and it became a target for teasing. ”I internalized this feeling that society didn’t like me, and I’ve always sought a form of recognition”. This drive has continually pushed her to set the bar higher and higher...

Life with Elegance
In the face of adversity and insecurity, Nicolle has always maintained the belief that everything would work out. Since her birth, her mother would often remind her that she was born with the caul – coming into the world surrounded by the amniotic sac, which in popular belief is a sign of happiness, luck, and abundance. From this belief, she drew inner strength, moving forward and bouncing back. ”I love taking risks; I play the stock market. I would have liked to invest and do business, but I couldn’t find partners”. In the same spirit, she has a passion for bargain-hunting and has a unique talent for finding designer pieces. Always impeccably dressed, she enjoys playing with fashion and has developed her own style, a mix of classic pieces with a touch of whimsy. Don’t be fooled by appearances; she doesn’t spend a fortune on clothes. ”I save everything; I’m frugal, and I only buy when I find a great deal”. This is a matter of upbringing and legacy. ”My mother, a master seamstress, dressed me until she passed away 14 years ago. She made me fabulous clothes”. Mother and daughter had a deeply close relationship. Now that her mother is no longer here, Nicolle honors her in her own way by savoring every moment, always finding wonder in life: ”I’m aware of the time that remains, I love seeing the blue sky, the trees in spring, and enjoying the present moment”. Looking back, Nicolle is fully conscious of the path she has traveled and feels fortunate to have worked in a field she is passionate about.
Skål Young
Passion is without a doubt the driving force behind her success. A contagious passion that Nicolle has infused within Skål Côte d’Azur and one she now seeks to pass on to the younger generation. Skål Young is a category of Skål International aimed at young professionals in the tourism industry. In Nice, Skål Young works in collaboration with local tourism schools to foster connections and interactions. ”For me, this transmission is essential; we work in demanding but passionate professions. We offer them immersion days with our fellow Skål members in tourism, and we help facilitate their search for internships and apprenticeships”. She enthusiastically talks about the young people now working at the Carlton Hotel, the Martinez Hotel, and a palace in Courchevel. This work is done hand-in-hand with Bertrand Petyt, a member of the Côte d’Azur Club who has become the international director of Skål. And then, there is her deeply-rooted conviction that she lives in the most beautiful region in the world. ”Almost my entire family is from Nice, from the Paillon Valley, from the tip of Escarène. I’ve had the chance to travel the world, but I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else”.
Life as a Couple
For thirty-four years, Nicolle has been happily in love with Jean-Louis. An engineer and globe- trotter for a large group specializing in cryogenics, he grew tired of constant travel and decided to take over the family tourism business in the hotel industry in Nice. They crossed paths at a tourism fair in Canada. Present at her side at every Skål Côte d’Azur meeting, Jean-Louis brings kindness and contributes to the family-like atmosphere that Nicolle has fostered within the association. Although life hasn’t spared them from challenges, they move forward hand-in-hand with impressive energy. Nicolle is the proud grandmother of two adorable grandchildren who live in Switzerland with their parents. ”To age well, you have to stay active”, she jokes. As president of Skål and ambassador of the Côte d’Azur for the Côte d’Azur France Tourism association, Nicolle accepts all invitations to represent the club, always shows up for her friends, and supports other networks in Nice. What’s the secret to such energy? ”A rigorous lifestyle and the daily consumption of vegetables from my garden, especially Nice’s zucchini flowers, of course!”
Skål-Skål!
At the end of her terms, Nicolle will continue to work for this association, to which she has dedicated so much of her time and effort, building bridges with other local tourism players. In October, the annual Skål International Congress will be held in Izmir. Skål International Côte d’Azur will present its film about the region, competing for the title of the world’s best club. It’s a wonderful recognition for Nicolle, a remarkable perfectionist who still struggles to embrace her own success. Yet success has certainly embraced her. At once fragile and determined, Nicolle, who once dreamed of entrepreneurship, has succeeded in rallying a growing community around her club. Unknowingly, she has become a prominent figure in Riviera tourism. The young woman with a spark has given meaning to her unique journey. Something tells me we won’t stop toasting her just yet. Skål! That’s what it’s all about. Skål, the Swedish acronym for Sundheit, Karlek, Alder, and Lyka, literally means health, friendship, long life, and happiness. Skål, Nicolle Martin!
